Pastor's Page

Pastor Scott was born in Albany, New York. His dad worked the night shift at the VA hospital, and began listening to Hebert W. Armstrong on the local AM station during his commute from the family home in Averill Park. This led to the family's eventual involvement with this works based religious cult and their relocating to El Paso, Texas and then Los Lunas, New Mexico. Growing up in the World Wide Church of God developed in Scott a dangerous misunderstanding of God and how it is that He relates to sinners.

In the late 70's a scandal broke out in the church which led to the Lumley family's excommunication (the best thing that ever happened to them)! Unfortunately Scott's faith was in his church and the good works he performed, separation from the church led to bitterness, which led to a complete plunge into rebellion and sin. Now that Scott was no longer adhering to the strict guidelines of the church, he was (in his own mind) separated from God and His love. For the next several years Scott spent his time abusing drugs and alcohol, and raging against God and the world.

As he matured and joined the Navy, married Gloria and started a family he found himself unable to live up to his own and other's expectations, no matter how hard he tried he couldn't break free from the same old bad habits and behaviors that eventually nearly cost him his family.

It was another radio program that eventually led to Scott's conversion from death to life! "A New Beginning" hosted by Greg Laurie; Pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California, would air on Scott's lunch break. As daily Scott listened, Pastor Greg would relentlessly declare that we are sinners and fall short of the glory of God, that eternal life was a gift given by God to everyone who repents and believes in the finished work of Jesus Christ upon the cross and His resurrection! It took awhile, but the Holy Spirit prevailed and one day Scott found himself praying a prayer of faith to receive Jesus Christ! He instantly began to enjoy forgiveness of sin and eternal life!

As Scott began to grow in his understanding of the Word of God he grew hungry for fellowship and found himself at Calvary Chapel of Albuquerque with Pastor Skip Heitzig. His wife Gloria was soon born again, and for a solid year they attended church there on Sunday mornings, benefiting greatly by the incredible gift of teaching that God has blessed Pastor Skip with!

As a result of fellowshipping at Calvary of Albuquerque, Scott met Ray Jaramillo who had recently moved from California with a call from the Lord to plant a church in the Rio Grande Valley. Soon Scott was working side by side with Ray and for eight years he served as an assistant to him; leading worship, teaching Bible studies, serving in every way that he could.

This was a rich and rewarding time in his life, a time of spiritual growth and education! It was also during this time that God gave Scott a tremendous burden for the teaching of the Word of God. Having been duped himself and having suffered the consequences of a misunderstanding of God and His Word Scott vowed to do all that he could to tell others about the Lord and His work of salvation!

Scott and Gloria had desired to some day visit upstate New York and the family members left behind so long ago. It seemed that with each passing year, either ministry duties or the arrival of another bundle of joy would prevent it! Strangely enough, it was the tragedy of 9/11 that opened the door of opportunity for Scott and Gloria to visit for Thanksgiving in 2001 (cheap airfare). While visiting, the Lord unexpectedly called them to resign Scott's position with Calvary Chapel Rio Grande Valley and relocate to Upstate New York to plant a Calvary Chapel!

Since then, Scott has served as the pastor of Calvary Chapel Fellowship in Ballston Spa, New York, and continues to see the mighty hand of God at work in His life and ministry! To God be the glory, great things He has done!
